Maui Film Festival, June 17th-21st

Summertime is officially here on Maui! We have recently had fairly consistent 85-90 degree weather over the past few weeks in Wailea. The first big south swells have also started to surface, with 5-8 foot surf on both southern shores of Maui and Oahu today. From my point of view, it seems as if we have transitioned into summer from winter with no spring season in between.

Year after year, one of my favorite parts about June is attending the Maui Film Festival. It’s really a great opportunity to spend some quality time with friends and family. Seriously, what better atmosphere could you ask for? Hanging out with loved ones underneath the stars at the Wailea Golf Club? C’mon, I mean it doesn’t get much better than that! The crowd is usually mixed with kama’aina (locals) and visitors alike.

Last year our family enjoyed several nights together at the film festival, which was a lot of fun. This time around, the Maui Film Festival will also be hosting a weekly series of movies at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, in addition to a series of academy screenings that the general public can attend during the holiday season. Typically, the festival will show a good amount of indie films and documentaries, in addition to some mainstream movies on occasion. This year there will be several notable celebrity tributes in addition to some fun parties to attend. Zooey Deschanel and Country musician Willie Nelson have been announced as the celebrity honorees for 2009.

This year actually marks the 10 year anniversary of the event, which presents a great opportunity to attend the festival if you have not participated in the past. The schedule of events, the online box office, and the film festival newsletter can be found online at http://www.mauifilmfestival.com. You can also follow real time updates for the film festival on the facebook and twitter social networks. Whether you live on Maui full time or just on vacation, I highly recommend attending the festival. See you there!
